Give an Egg, Sell an Egg

Give an Egg, Sell an Egg

At dinner that night, my father asked us what we were going to do to give back to the world. He stated that today was filled with blessings. So, what was our plan to give back? I wasn’t sure. I told him I was going to think about it. A few days passed and I thought about a way to give back. It was called, “Give an egg. Sell an egg.” I heard of kids doing this so I thought I would give it a try. This is how it works…

The Power of Grassroots Fundraising

The Power of Grassroots Fundraising

It started 43 years ago, in 1981. I think I was 17 or 18 and I had a little crush on Jimmy Garfinkle’s brother David (brothers who live with type 1 diabetes and are members of JDRF’s Montreal-based founding families).  So when Jimmy asked me to do the Bike-a-Thon, one of the first JDRF fundraising events, I obliged. I took a few girlfriends with me, and we were all eager to help and support the type 1 diabetes T1D community.

A Beautiful Difference

A Beautiful Difference
Many, many, many moons ago, I went to West Hill High School. My years were 1976 to 1980. The school was not a good fit for me. It was way too big. And…
The halls had a horrible sweaty human, bio-clinical iodine odor to it. I think the pool water was used to wash the halls. The only thing which kept me going back each day, were my friends. Actually, there was an excellent geography and art teacher, who inspired me.

I’m So Frickin Excited!

I’m So Frickin Excited!
I had to keep it a secret since June 2021. Just as last year’s event ended, this JDRF campaign idea popped up.
It has been like a Jack-in-the-Box in my body. I love everything about it: the empowering message, Rosie the Riveter, the colours of blue and yellow, the theme and words. I love the message and the hope that We Can Cure It!
It seems we have a lot to cure in the world this year. I didn’t have this in mind when I originally worked on these ideas.
Now, it’s coming together in a multi-purpose way.

Who Would’ve Thought?

Who Would’ve Thought?

It was definite…There would be no letter campaign. No Walk to Cure Diabetes event. Stay tuned as something was going to happen. Not sure what it’s going to be, but head office is currently working on it. So, I boxed up my campaign letters and cleaned up my dining room table to make room for a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Disappointing. The first time in 40 years… I guess there is always a first for everything. I felt like crap. Worried. Anxious. Fearful. I couldn’t fall asleep. I wasn’t eating much. I just didn’t feel any motivation. I was jammed. We are in a serious situation. Stay home. Stay safe continued.

BUT…THEN CAME THE BIG NEWS!!!

Helping in some way, is the way to go. The more we help others, the more we help ourselves too.
A healthy mind is a healthy spirit in a healthier world.
Now that I have regained my writing, teaching and fundraising, I feel more like myself in a very different world.
I hope this will inspire you to move forward in doing what you do, being who you are and try to be Part of the Solution.

‘Tis The Season of Giving

‘Tis The Season of Giving

I am embarrassed to say that at this time I haven’t exercised in weeks!  Which answers the question, why do I feel like crap?  I am close to a month behind in my journal writing.  Oh, the thoughts I have wanted to put down on paper and didn’t have the time to.  When I get around to filling in those days, I am certain to have forgotten what I initially wanted to say.

Diabetes fundraising effort a tribute to friends

Diabetes fundraising effort a tribute to friends

Hampstead resident and Suburban columnist, author and educator Suzanne Reisler Litwin has also been working tirelessly — for 35 years — to help find a cure for T1D through fundraising. She was inspired to do so when two of her teen friends, brothers, were diagnosed with the disease. “When I think about the day it’s deemed cured, I can’t imagine a greater feeling of success.”

Baby, I Launched It!

Baby, I Launched It!

After months and months of planning, I have officially launched my 2018 Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Fundraising campaign! It’s a really big deal for me. I have been involved with JDRF since its inception. Somewhere well over 35+ years ago, I participated in their first ever JDRF Bike-a-thon event. I haven’t stopped raising funds for this cause as a cure has not been found. Until a cure for diabetes is found, I won’t stop. I don’t think I can stop unless we obtain our goal. It’s got to come soon because I’m cranking up there in the age zone.
